If you’re after a walk with a good flat, wide path with a cafe and free parking the Whitegate Way ticks all those boxes. Once heavy goods trains laden with salt lumbered to Cuddington to join the Chester – Manchester line. Today the old railway line has been removed and transformed to provides a haven for wildlife and a pleasant place for a stroll or ride.
The path stretching for six miles (10km) from the heart of Winsford to Cuddington, the route offers easy walking for all ages along a varied route.
The best place to join the walk is at Whitegate Station. This is where the Victoria Station House still stands and has since been turned into a cafe which is ran by volunteers. There is also a large free carpark, toilets and a picnic area.
When you arrive at the carpark (CW7 2QE) you can choose to either walk left or right as the station is like a midway point. Remember, it’s an out and back route so however far you walk, you have to walk the same back. I generally walk about 3-4km and then turn around as that’s a nice 1.5 hour walk. The path is great for pushchairs, bikes or scooters.
The day me and my daughter went, it was a little muddy, however, so we had to take the scooter back to the car after just 200 yards. But we then enjoyed a lovely walk together, and I got the hear the many thoughts of an 8 year old including being asked how glass is made!
The cafe is a community ran project serving a selection of sandwiches, freshly made cakes, icecreams and drinks. There is plenty of seating outside included a covered area. The team at the cafe provide a friendly location where they run “Chatty Cafe” so you can go meet new people over a coffee and cake.
