Birthmarks come in all shapes, sizes, and colours. There are many different kinds out there, and it’s important to know which ones you have in case you wish to remove them. Laser treatment works incredibly well for most birthmarks. As some types of birthmarks can take up a large area, this can cause self-esteem issues which result in removal. If you have a large birthmark that you want to get rid of, laser treatment is a safe and effective way to do this.

Below is information on some of the different kinds of birthmarks that can be removed with laser treatment. Skincare experts The Laser Treatment Clinic have helped create this list detailing what you need to know about the varying types of birthmarks and how laser treatment can help.

Café au lait birthmarks

These birthmarks usually appear as brown patches of skin that show up at birth. They are permanent but can fade or even increase in size with age. They can appear anywhere on the body and are completely harmless. This hyperpigmentation however, can make some people self-conscious, and they wish to have it removed.

Laser treatment is an effective removal option when it comes to café au lait birthmarks. Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a great laser treatment that is commonly used to remove a variety of birthmarks, including café au lait spots.

Macular stains (salmon patches)

Macular stains, or commonly referred to as salmon patches or angel kisses, are flat patches of pink or red skin that are usually found on the forehead, eyelids, or back of the neck. These vascular birthmarks often fade with age, and they may even disappear on their own, needing no treatment.

These birthmarks are harmless, but they can persist into adulthood which can cause some insecurities. In this case, laser treatment can help fade these birthmarks and in turn, boost your confidence.

Port-wine stains

This type of birthmark is fairly common and is a result of blood vessel malformations. They show up as pink, red or even purple patches that typically appear on the face but can also show up on any part of the body. They tend to stay out and may darken as you age. Despite these birthmarks being harmless, some people choose to remove them due to feeling self-conscious.

IPL laser treatment is one of the ways skincare professionals can help to fade or even remove these birthmarks to improve your confidence.

Moles

Moles are a common type of pigmented birthmark that is present at birth. They are brown or black, and can vary in size. Common moles do not change over time, but some moles can, and they can possibly turn into melanoma. For this reason, it’s important to keep an eye on moles if you have them, and it’s crucial that you get them checked out if they change in appearance.

Whilst most birthmarks are harmless and do not require medical treatment, it’s always important to get them checked out if they’re concerning you. If your birthmark is causing you emotional distress, laser treatment may be a good option for you to consider. Always consult a medical professional if you’re concerned about your birthmark or wish to have it removed.
